"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is a nine-part Pink Floyd composition written by Roger Waters, Richard Wright and David Gilmour. It is a tribute to former band member Syd Barrett. The song was first performed on their 1974 French tour, and recorded for their 1975 concept album Wish You Were Here. The song was intended to be a side-long composition (like "Atom Heart Mother" and "Echoes"), but was ultimately split into two parts and used to bookend the album, with new material composed that was more relevant to this song, and to the situation in which the band found themselves. | /> Lyrics: Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun. Shine on you crazy diamond. Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky. Shine on you crazy diamond. You were caught in the cross fire of childhood and stardom. Blown on the steel breeze. Come on you target for faraway laughter. Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine! You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon. Shine on you crazy diamond. Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light. Shine on you crazy diamond. Well you wore out your welcome with random precision. Rode on the steel breeze. Come on you raver, you seer of visions. Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Pink Floyd has been in my life even before I was born. I am about to turn 36 and they are still my number 1. Sad to say I never saw them live. I swear if I close my eyes, I can picture those summer afternoons, back in the 90's, when my dad would put this album on the stereo, out loud so the neighbours could experience real music as well. He would lay on the couch, close his eyes and just listen. And I would do that too. I really miss those moments we had, just the two of us, listening to Floyd. I really miss you, dad. I hope you know that.

I'm 55 this year, and I started listening to this in the mid 70's when I was a wee lad, and like many of the other folks who commented, it reminds me of someone. My oldest brother - who incidentally died last March - went nuts in the early 80's when he was in his mid 20's. Too many drugs and just the pressures of life took him to a schizophrenic state of mind and he was tormented for most of his adult life. Demonic voices filled his head and no medication, whether given by some Psychiatrist or bought on the corner from a pusher man, could alleviate and ease his troubled mind. Thank God the voices didn't order him to strike out and hurt people like they do many folks, and thank my mother for spending the countless hours in lines and filling out forms and getting him into the system so that he at least was able to reside in a half way house rather than on the streets and jails of our fair land. Shine on you crazy diamond brother, I'll be up to see you in a few decades. I'm sure you have at last found some peace.
You know Vento Aureo is definetly taking too long because of the lack of JoJo shitposting in music videos nowdays

I recently did a heroic dose of psilocybin mushrooms and listened to the Holy Trinity (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall). It was the most significant experience of my life, I was at the peak when this song played and I swear I met god.
This song holds an incredible spot in my heart. I remember being very young and watching my mom dance and spin around the living room and kitchen listening to this as loud as our living room speakers could push it. Cleaning and enjoying herself with a Joint in hand. Then of course, the lyrics would come. And she would sing like it was her last breath on earth. I miss her dearly to this day, and every time I hear this song, I can see her once more enjoying life as it unfolded in front of her. Taking on every obstacle, like nothing was too big. Honestly makes me cry nearly every time. Shine on, Momma. You crazy, crazy diamond.

Best 13 Minutes and 22 seconds of my life
Is this a Jojo reference?

One of the best song of Pink Floyd for me. Simply beautiful.

It seriously makes me sad that most children nowadays won't experience the utter genius and beauty of pink floyd, the only reason why is that they don't have the patience, and they would not bother to listen properly to the lyrics and meaning, and i know many people who would laugh at the fact its 13 minutes long, and just act like its not worth it. This is by no means a "i was born in the wrong generation" comment, im just saying, more people need to hear these songs, instead of thinking that all they need to hear is just one song, as Pink Floyd's range is so broad. This just needs more exposure and should really be as famous as "The Wall Pt. 2" As in my opinion, this is better than part 2, but again, it needs the same exposure.

No idea how old I was 14 or 15 ,all I know is the first time I heard Pink Floyd they completely blew my mind and still do to this day. But the great ones always do, The Doors ,Black Sabbath, AC/DC and Stevie Ray Vaughan, just to name a few. When you heard them it was almost like they were putting in touch with some part of yourself and the world you never knew existed.

OH! Those four notes Unreal!!

Pink Floyd are masters of simplicity, when I was on art school in Boston I didn't get it. As a musician and artist now I do. The negative or empty space is just as important as the painted areas.
This is so good it will heal all your wounds and leave you feeling just gureato.
I started listening to this 22 years ago. Im 21 now.
This was the only song that kept me going through some very hard time in my life. Thank you for that PF!

I was fortunate enough to see them in 74. I was 12 & it was my 1st live concert. They opened with this then played the complete Dark Side of the Moon, then the second part of Shine on as their encore. Simply put, I was absolutely mesmerized. I barely moved a muscle I was so enthralled. Since, I have seen countless gigs with the best of the best but Pink Floyd still stands out in my world as one of the best & most memorable.

This song reminds me when I was in Scotland, sitting alone on a mountain top with nothing else around me than the wind, whispering in my ears. This music fits the heavenly experience perfectly.

Casually dropping some lyrics: Remember when you were young? You shone like the sun Shine on, you crazy diamond Now there's a look in your eyes Like black holes in the sky Shine on, you crazy diamond You were caught in the cross fire Of childhood and stardom Blown on the steel breeze Come on, you target for faraway laughter Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine! You reached for the secret too soon You cried for the moon Shine on, you crazy diamond Threatened by shadows at night And exposed in the light Shine (shine) on, you crazy (you crazy) diamond Well, you wore out your welcome With random precision Rode on the steel breeze Come on, you raver, you seer of visions Come on, you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Get hold of the the best amp & speakers you can, place them on the floor pointing inwards, lie on said floor with your head in between them, whack the volume up to full, smoke a joint (optional, but recommended), play this and enjoy. You're welcome.
