Drilling 101: How a deep water well is drilled

Drilling wells is one of the most important activities in the process of finding hydrocarbon reservoirs and producing oil and gas from these reservoirs to meet our energy needs. This video by Shell explains the basics of how offshore deep water wells are drilled, including explanations and visualization of important components, processes and techniques that drilling rigs use today to safely drill wells. Very interesting. For those of you on the rigs, thanks for your hard and dangerous work. I appreciate what you do and am in awe of it.
nice introduction to deepwater drilling. excellent overview.
wonderful achievement i would like t0 be part of your success story

If you need triconen bits or PDC bits for water /oil well drilling. We can supply 3 7/8"-17 1/2". Jessica watt: 008613629902894 ;skype: Jessicazhou_0703
incredible that this is actually possible

Great video, very easy to understand and informative.
Oh thank god the mud used for drilling oil to be burned for energy - is environmentally friendly.
The safety of deep sea drilling is one of the most important areas. A good way to get more information about the relationship between dissolved gas and free gas in the mud is ultrasound. A fast multi-channel process many parameters can be measured in real time under turbulent flow conditions in the borehole fluid. In addition to monitoring the flow rate of the mud and the  pressure measurements can analyze the characteristics of the mud. New electronic methods allow even the smallest changes in the speed of sound through the dissolved gases (a few percent saturation) and due to lower inflows of hydrocarbons are sure to measure and to warn. This also works with oil based mud. Further details of the measurement technique, see below:   http://www.ibj-technology.com/Kick_Detection.htm http://www.slideee.com/slide/gas-kick-detector http://de.slideshare.net/Engineers/offshore-gas-kick-detector

Dear all, this video is so good to explain people about the drilling process! I would like to know how to obtain authorization to use it for educational purposes. Thank you.

Whether or not we should be drilling I won't address: but this process is an absolute marvel of engineering. Absolutely stunning

Decent graphics, but as an editor I think this video is HORRIBLE. WHY all the crossfades, it is terrible storytelling. This video is probably edited by the 3d animator himself. I expected more quality from Shell

Not so safe, people have very short termed memory, they forget what happened years ago when the hole gulf stream was polluted by our Wells that crumbled and rotted out causeing massive oil spill into the gulf of Mexico killing countless fish and birds and the oil spills that ended up all along the shorelines.🦂
Lucia Zavaleta
So i thought oil rigs were cemented to the sea floor but there just floating there 😖😖 nothing is safe about that.
its not a complexed process, its interesting, the pressure and unpredictability of the hole is the issue. That bop fails big problem. bp seems to have the most safety issues.
Sam Biswas
Not mentioned the HD disaster.
Then a casual 1.2 earthquake breaks that weak cement casing and oils spills everywhere. Is the oil environmentally friendly?

Excellent summary of deep water drilling operations.  This is a good primer for those entering this area of offshore exploration and development..
Was this aimed at 12 year olds?
OIL CORPORATIONS are ruining us all!  We should at least ban offshore oil drilling! If anything drilling for oil in the ocean is a horrible idea.

Funny thing you say there, that you use seismic technology and what you show us is a part of code for the webbrowser "Mynx". Do you only browse for oil? The code you show on around 0:30 is the source of Mynx found on ioccc dot org/2005/mynx/mynx.c
