Shuttle Atlantis STS-132 - Amazing Shuttle Launch Experience

Kennedy Space Center, May 14th 2010. I was privileged to travel to the Kennedy Space Center, to watch the launch of Atlantis, on what was then, the final "scheduled" flight of the orbiter (STS-132). This video is my homage to the shuttle program, through the in depth experience of a single orbiter launch. I believe we should be thankful for the Atlantis orbiter, all her astronauts, the countless NASA staff who made her fly, and the American people who created a space vehicle of extraordinary power and grace. This footage incorporates numerous camera views from the ground, footage I took during launch, and video and audio from NASA showing the orbiter stack itself, during takeoff and flight -- in order to experiencing the all the preparation and the resulting eight and a half minute exhilarating ride into space. In places, the timeline of the actual events has been extended slightly to allow us to see different viewpoints of the same moment, and better experience the amazing feat of launching a spacecraft into orbit. Enjoy the ride! MORE BACKGROUND ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After this flight, Atlantis was processed and prepared to fly one last time... this time as "on call" STS-335, which would remain flight ready, should either of the remaining two orbiters flights require a rescue mission. A rescue flight was not needed and Congress, in a rare moment of clarity, appropriated enough money to extend the program to allowed the already "flight ready" Atlantis to launch one last time and to become the last shuttle mission of the Shuttle Program, as STS-135. Atlantis now has a home at the Kennedy Space Center. MUSIC TRACKS (In order of appearance) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1) Band Of Brothers Suite Two, Band Of Brothers, (Michael Kamen) 2) Rise, The Space Between Us, (Craig Armstrong) 3) After The Storm, The Space Between Us, (Craig Armstrong) 4) After Antietam, Glory Soundtrack, (James Horner) 5) Now We Are Free (Juba's Mix), Gladiator: More Music From The 6) Motion Picture, (Hanz Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard) 7) Hymn, The Space Between Us, (Craig Armstrong)

This is a great video I wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. There are a lot of great things happening with the space program and other companies participating in the space program , but there's something especially amazing about what NASA has done and what they have accomplished through the work of so many people. I really encourage people to check out the book "High Calling" written by the Columbia Commander Rick husband wife.

To all of you wanting the SS back, the SLS rocket will be made of used SS parts. And it will only take total 20 years to fly it. THAT'S progress!

Am I the only one who wished they'd cut the music at the moment of launch so you could hear the thundering of the engines?
Aleksandr Manokha
God bless America. In fact, all these people are real heroes. Not just the astronaut themselves. As well as all the staff and many others. Each of them does its own small business for the overall great result. Thank you very much for the video, I got a lot of pleasure from watching.

I wish there hadn't been music playing over the launch. We don't need it to be made more exciting. It's already good enough, excitement wise. Great video all the same and thank you for sharing it with us.

I miss watching these beauties...God Bless...just the beginning for man..xoxo
Jake Glassmoyer
I miss these launches. I was close and watched this one. Even with my cheapie binoculars, I could see it basically into orbit. I can't help to think that no matter how dumb flat earthers are, if they just experienced a single sts launch, they would end their stupidity. No flat earth....no dome....no special effects or cgi..no complicated conspiracy stories...just a gorgeous machine made by man going to space. Pretty amazing watching this with your own eyes feeling and hearing the power. It has a way of changing everything when you experience a launch close up. I know it's not practical but bring back a modern shuttle!

I miss the shuttles. They were something special and futuristic for me. When they were standing on the launch pad, they looked like a ship to me, about to leave for another world. Much more exciting than the boring rockets before and nowadays. Great video Jonathan - greetings from Germany

I'd be as proud as hell and I'd give my life a meaning if only I could drive the van that takes the astronauts to the launch pad. I'd be so proud and, somehow, a part of the greatest adventure of mankind.

Thanks to the Industrial revolution is what made this possible.

This is the best launch video I've ever seen. I get tearful every time I see it. I watched Shepard launch into space and right back down again in my 6th grade classroom, then John Glenn orbit and watched Neil take his first step onto the moon as a newlywed. I have not missed a launch since even though they quit being a huge event on TV. I was watching the "Teacher Launch" live though and then when Columbia broke up on reentry, and they were no longer routine. Thank you for this and thank you Atlantis. I am now a grandmother 6x over.

I love the band of brothers music great job man

We were there as well, the only Shuttle launch I have ever seen - brings back memories - no video does justice to the actual brightness of the SRB's as they thundered off - not to mention feeling the crackling of the exhaust from the Kennedy viewing area.  Saw everything on the ground that was shown on this video, including watching the big screen!  Still have this entire launch on VHS-C!  Where does the time go... thank s for posting.

I just can't imagine the feelings these astronauts have traveling in rockets!!! I felt like crying watching this. Not because of fear, just the absolute beauty of that rocket & the BRAVE men inside it. I mean it's just so unbelievably incredible to make such a piece of art & have the ability to control/operate it too. Just blows my mind!! I watched the ascent of Columbia before this launch video & was reminded of how beautifully dangerous these missions are so i mean seriously my heart goes out to all the soldiers & astronauts & law enforcement out there who put their lives on the line everyday😘😘😘

9:58 As it lifts off you can see the engines gimballing to keep a 2,100-ton stack upright. I alway look for that in those close-up shots.

Footage like this makes me proud of the humanity. When those engines started tears came to my eyes. Beautiful.

EPIC on so many levels, really hope NASA re-investigates into getting back on the moon.

Wish you luck and safe trips all the time. I feel happy looking at the chalinger and wonder how the the two boosters connected and how they detach in space. Drive safely 😍 And Have a good and safe trips.

I still can’t believe that such a machine was built by men, it’s just an incredible thing and watching those engines light and then the boosters as she lifts thousands of tons to a speed of 18000 mph plus , wow.

I wanted to say thanks again to NASA and all the Great American People who made all this Space Program possible! I was a little boy out of Bavaria (now 56), when Apollo 11 launched with 3000 Tons of weight and 110 meters of height, my Grandfather born 1901 was 68 years old and with tears in his eyes, he said never ever would I have imagined to see this in my life, to see Astronauts fly to the Moon! I watched all the Apollo Flights live on German TV, this was so great to see and never ever will I get this out of my brain, even if some people say this was all fake! Dear Atlantis and all Crews, thanks for all of your service to human mankind, thanks for having made this planet Earth a better place!! Best out of Bavaria!

What an amazing work NASA did, the power of human intellect demonstrates in these works start from imagination to intention and finally into reality.

Fantastic tribute to a great machine. Somehow i don't think any future launches of astronauts into space from KSC could ever equal the spectacular show the shuttle always put on. Okay, they were not the safest of launch vehicles, but they had style by the tons. Mighty machines indeed.
