Thus song came out in 1996, 17 years after 1979. I'm 34, 17 years ago I *was* 17 and this song and video makes me pine for those days. Being a teenager is simultaneously the worst and best time of your life. Whether a particular girl likes you is the most important thing in your life, now it's your mortgage. If some teenager is reading this - don't squander your youth, enjoy it. Ask that girl out, join that club, push your boundaries, because tomorrow you'll be 50 and no one will remember if you failed and otherwise you'll be filled with regret if you don't.

This song makes me miss the 90's. Always remember watching my older brother watch mtv and have this song playing. I was only like 7 years old.

The 90s were the last batch of teens who lived 'off the grid'. When you did crazy things like they do in this video, nobody ever interrupted it with a phonecall or text. You had no compulsion to 'share' the moment on facebook or instagram, it was only shared with those who were there, and maybe with a story or two the following day. Yes, life off of the grid was fun.

Beautiful song. 2018 anyone???

This song gives me memories of playing with friends not knowing it’ll be the last day we hangout before life hits.

Dude, this song gives me such an intense feeling of longing. Like I really miss someone, but I don't know who it is.

Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time On a live wire right up off the street You and I should meet June bug skipping like a stone With the headlights pointed at the dawn We were sure we'd never see an end to it all And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below Double cross the vacant and the bored They're not sure just what we have in the store Morphine city slippin' dues, down to see that We don't even care, as restless as we are We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts And poured cement, lamented and assured To the lights and towns below Faster than the speed of sound Faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope Justine never knew the rules Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls No apologies ever need be made I know you better than you fake it, to see And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below The street heats the urgency of sound As you can see there's no one around

I may very well be the oldest one to post here. I love this song. I was 21 in 1979, and already been in service, but this song makes think about my teen years in the early seventies. Great song.

This is a song of a generation where things were simple

When he says "cool kids never have the time" just reminds me of my reckless teenage years. Breaking into pools, drinking 40z the forest or rooftops with a group of friends, abandon places. I was known as the Stoop Kid. Had the livest stoop in the whole block.I felt so cool! Now I'm a stay at home mom and engaged. Glad I lived my life to the fullest before I settled down! And part of it was with my Fiance too. We were known as the chillest couple when I was 19 years old.

My senior year 1997 we played this and drove around having fun. Best summer ever! End of an era. Miss the 90s! We had awesome music! Kids today don't even know what music is.

I think the most amazing thing about this song was that it was made in about 24 hours. Billy before releasing Mellon Collie had one more song. His producers thought he was crazy for making this song very last minute. 19 years later, its a masterpiece.

I knew them when I lived in Chicago right before they made it big. Still have the demo tape they sold when they played gigs. Billy was dating our friend Kris and that's how we got to know them. They did end up marrying and divorcing. I had moved away by then. It was unreal hearing them on the radio for the first time. My God, the memories...

I cannot handle the nostalgia from this song.

If you make everyone fricken' poor they will start being social. A filled belly, house, and car will make lots of people anti-social. A man named Joe Sutphin who lived in the 1930's said people were nicer to each other during the depression. When they got their bellies filled in the 1950's they became far more anti-social. I think humans are basically anti-social if they are doing well.

In the mid-90s people would have listened to this and felt cheerful and probably danced to it. Nowadays, in the late 2010s; people listen to it and feel sad and nostalgic.

I think people have lost the appreciation for special moments. People are so caught up in trying to "capture" special moments that I feel like some have forgotten to just "have" a special moment. It makes me so sad that we live in such a device oriented world, rather than a people oriented one.
James Smith
I'm so depressed. Nostalgia leads to introspection which leads to existential despair which leads to suicidal thoughts. I need a friend.

This wasn't the original video they shot for song, but they had to put this vidoe together after a production assistant left the recorded tapes of the first video on the top of the car and lost them, they threw this one together like in one or two days but you know what this video seems like it belongs with this video,

If i were to go back to my younger days.. i would keep everything real. In the decades to come, the children that came of age listening to this music as the soundtrack of their lives would experience the upheaval that so many of them felt in their personal lives on an international stage. The Meloncholia of the 90's teens would go on to define their careers, personal struggles and lives and if you could ask any of them to describe their lives in a song, 1979 was one of the most popular responses. It's the sadness and the hopefulness and hopelessness all wrapped up into exuberance of youth. Back when you could be a youth on an individual level before the social consciousness collective took over all music, experience and emotion.
Darren Groves
The 90s were so cool I didn't even know it back then I was just living my teens care free life was good now looking back at the age of 36 I see what a great time that was.

This song resonates with me more than maybe any other from the genre and era. This one stuck with me over the years and it’s just as good then as it is now, actually it’s better now. The innocence of that era is gone but this song captures is perfectly.

I just saw them last night in bologna (18/10/18). I loved them when I was in college (20yrs ago) and didn’t want to pass this opportunity to see them finally live, I thought my feelings would change listening to them after all these years but no, last night was the first time I’ve heard them sing live and honestly they were so good. It was an amazing experience. This song is one of my faves.

In 1979 I was 18. When this song came out I was 35. I remember listening to it at a gym and thinking, 'Shit, this good!' You've got to remember, I grew up in the 80's when we were tripping over 'good'. In fact, we had to shovel 'good' out of the way. However, this song holds up 20 plus years on, as fresh as when it came out. How many 90's bands can you say that about? Nirvana certainly, maybe Oasis, Björk, Blue Rodeo - help me out here Gen-Xers, anybody else?
