This song makes me miss the 90's. Always remember watching my older brother watch mtv and have this song playing. I was only like 7 years old.

The 90s were the last batch of teens who lived 'off the grid'. When you did crazy things like they do in this video, nobody ever interrupted it with a phonecall or text. You had no compulsion to 'share' the moment on facebook or instagram, it was only shared with those who were there, and maybe with a story or two the following day. Yes, life off of the grid was fun.

This song gives me memories of playing with friends not knowing it’ll be the last day we hangout before life hits.

Message to any young folk. Your a kid for a very short time. The days, weeks, years seem to last forever but they really don't. Cherish this time, don't be in a hurry to grow up because adulthood sneaks up on you and lasts the rest of your life. Then those days you were an innocent kid seem like a distant memory. BTW, i was 10 in 1979 and remember the music and times.

I'm the turd sitting in the shower kissing his girlfriend. We were extras and the director saw us cuddling by craft services and asked us to be in that scene. It was only the 2nd time we'd kissed. I also started that pit in the living room because i didn't really like the Smashing Pumpkins at the time. I liked minor threat and opp ivy and we had to shoot that living room scene for over 5 hours. Billy Coorgan yelled "we don't like mosh pits at our shows and we don't want them in our videos". Everyone froze like kids being reprimanded by the principal. It's completely surreal to see this video 20 years later. Still close friends with her and we revisited the video the other day. Such a great song!!

Damn. This song is so different than anything I've heard. It's making me feel nostalgic for things that haven't happened yet, WHAT.

Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time On a live wire right up off the street You and I should meet June bug skipping like a stone With the headlights pointed at the dawn We were sure we'd never see an end to it all And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below Double cross the vacant and the bored They're not sure just what we have in the store Morphine city slippin' dues, down to see that We don't even care, as restless as we are We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts And poured cement, lamented and assured To the lights and towns below Faster than the speed of sound Faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope Justine never knew the rules Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls No apologies ever need be made I know you better than you fake it, to see And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below The street heats the urgency of sound As you can see there's no one around M

I knew them when I lived in Chicago right before they made it big. Still have the demo tape they sold when they played gigs. Billy was dating our friend Kris and that's how we got to know them. They did end up marrying and divorcing. I had moved away by then. It was unreal hearing them on the radio for the first time. My God, the memories...

If you don't feel old yet, this song was released closer to 1979 than 2018 by 5 years.

When he says "cool kids never have the time" just reminds me of my reckless teenage years. Breaking into pools, drinking 40z the forest or rooftops with a group of friends, abandon places. I was known as the Stoop Kid. Had the livest stoop in the whole block.I felt so cool! Now I'm a stay at home mom and engaged. Glad I lived my life to the fullest before I settled down! And part of it was with my Fiance too. We were known as the chillest couple when I was 19 years old.

Thus song came out in 1996, 17 years after 1979. I'm 34, 17 years ago I *was* 17 and this song and video makes me pine for those days. Being a teenager is simultaneously the worst and best time of your life. Whether a particular girl likes you is the most important thing in your life, now it's your mortgage. If some teenager is reading this - don't squander your youth, enjoy it. Ask that girl out, join that club, push your boundaries, because tomorrow you'll be 50 and no one will remember if you failed and otherwise you'll be filled with regret if you don't.

I may very well be the oldest one to post here. I love this song. I was 21 in 1979, and already been in service, but this song makes think about my teen years in the early seventies. Great song.

I think people have lost the appreciation for special moments. People are so caught up in trying to "capture" special moments that I feel like some have forgotten to just "have" a special moment. It makes me so sad that we live in such a device oriented world, rather than a people oriented one.

The 1974 Dodge Charger in this video was only 20 yrs old or so. Those "old" cars were everywhere back in the mid 90's...It would be like driving a car from 1999 now.

ATTENTION EVERYONE PINING THAT LIFE WAS BETTER BACK THEN WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY first up this is a music mtv video.... they all advertise the best looking life which probably depicts one of the best days a person could have which most of us dont get on a regular basis. Second up, if you find your friends looking at your phone more than you then GET BETTER FRIENDS, i dont think they care enough to be off their phone to spend time with you which is wrong, i go to things with mates all the time and they almost never look at their phone. You guys need to shut the fuck up, sure it was a different time back then but it doesnt make it a better one because you watched this video.. open your eyes people, MTV is filmed to show the best angle of life possible. and find people that choose you over their phones damn

this song makes me remember my ex boyfriend that passed away this year, he used to sing and play guitar. I forgot how good smashing pumpkins was when we broke up, now just makes me miss him and remember that love and songs like this last forever in our lifes.

I just recently turned 18 and I'm realizing how quickly these years pass you by. Adult life is almost around the corner, and to me it feels like just yesterday I started high school. It's crazy and you really have to cherish these times while you have them.

Man I miss the 90's. I never amounted to much in high school. Went into the Army after to escape the small town life. No girls, no popularity, just a few friends but I never thought I would miss it this much. There's a certain aura to the 90's that I think was the last unique decade. Life seemed so much easier. The music was better. We still had a bit of innocence then. We had to spend time together in order to be social. Now it's gone and so is the part of my life I never thought I would miss.

Ok so I'm going to describe what this song means to me I remember the first time I heard this song I was 8 years old in 2012 and my dad turned up the radio while we were on our way to the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight rises and I felt really happy and from that point on whenever I hear this song the nostalgia is very strong there are more songs that are nostalgic for me but this one really hits it like no other. It's a shame that new music can't be as good as old music, because now people (12 and up) are gonna remember songs like.. Idk any shitty new rap song is gonna be nostalgic like this one and that's honestly sad

The kids of the social media generation don't know how bad they have it. Everything is a contest, everything is about who has the best photo, the best life, the best pair of shoes. The 90s and everything before 2010s really were THE days to cherish. Nobody was in a competition, we were all running our own races, living in the moment. Bliss.
Brandon Spain
You know how people now are so dedicated to the 90s today. Well back in the 90s, people were very dedicated to the 70s, always look back to songs, and even the show That 70s Show makes more sense. And people claimed the 70s was better than the 90s. It truly was a different time.
Ray King
This wasn't the original video they shot for song, but they had to put this vidoe together after a production assistant left the recorded tapes of the first video on the top of the car and lost them, they threw this one together like in one or two days but you know what this video seems like it belongs with this video,

So glad my childhood was before the brink of technology, but also glad that im still young enough to enjoy the tech of today as well. Best of both worlds. Tech of today, but fond memories of it all before and the nostalgia I have today, of 1979, The Smashing Pumpkins. Top 5 all time.

In the decades to come, the children that came of age listening to this music as the soundtrack of their lives would experience the upheaval that so many of them felt in their personal lives on an international stage. The Meloncholia of the 90's teens would go on to define their careers, personal struggles and lives and if you could ask any of them to describe their lives in a song, 1979 was one of the most popular responses. It's the sadness and the hopefulness and hopelessness all wrapped up into exuberance of youth. Back when you could be a youth on an individual level before the social consciousness collective took over all music, experience and emotion.

It's so nostalgic... The combination of this music and those clips brings me a mix of happy and sad feelings. My will now is to get the car and drive without a destination set, with the windows and sunroof open, just feeling the wind in my face...

If i were to go back to my younger days.. i would keep everything real. In the mid-90s people would have listened to this and felt cheerful and probably danced to it. Nowadays, in the late 2010s; people listen to it and feel sad and nostalgic.

I think the most amazing thing about this song was that it was made in about 24 hours. Billy before releasing Mellon Collie had one more song. His producers thought he was crazy for making this song very last minute. 19 years later, its a masterpiece.

This song is bitter/sweet for me. The imagery in the video reminds me of long-lost friends. Even specific clips of cruising, house parties, breaking in a pool late at night, and hitting the 7-11 @ 3 in the morning. Like a clip from my 20s. We didn’t trash the pool and 7-11 though. For me it was more like 1997 instead of the 1979. And that is about when the song came out.
